Researcher/Staff scientist
The Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) promotes, co-ordinates and finances fundamental and applied physics research in the Netherlands. It is an autonomous foundation responsible to the physics division of the national research council NWO. FOM employs about 950 people, of whom about 325 are PhD students and 100 are post-docs, who work at FOM research institutes and in university laboratories. Additional funding is via the Technology Foundation (STW), the European Union, and industry.
The FOM Institute for Plasma Physics invites qualified applicants for the position of
Researcher/ Staff scientist
To set up and run an FTICR mass spectrometer coupled to the beamline of the new Free Electron Laser 'FELICE'.
Job description
The Free Electron Laser for IntraCavity Experiments (FELICE) is the new source of intense, tunable IR radiation at the international Free Electron Laser facility FELIX. It is constructed to allow for intracavity experiments on dilute, gas-phase samples, which can be exposed to IR pulse energies up to a factor of one hundred higher than currently available in extra-cavity free electron laser experiments. One of the intra-cavity experiments will be an FTICR mass spectrometer, where the photodissociation spectroscopy and dynamics of mass-selected molecular ions can be investigated.
You will set up a new superconducting FTICR mass spectrometer and develop a research program in the fields of ion spectroscopy, multiple photon excitation dynamics and/or biomolecular mass spectrometry. Acquisition of additional financial support for this program from the various funding agencies is part of the duties. Furthermore, you will provide support to, and collaborate with, external users of the free electron laser facility.
Requirements
- PhD and several years of working experience in experimental physics or physical chemistry
- Hands-on expertise in mass spectrometry
- Proven laboratory skills
- Experience with FTICR-MS is an important advantage
- Experience with electronic structure calculations is an advantage
- Good communication and collaboration skills, team player
- Good publication track record
Employment conditions
An employment contract for the duration of 2 years in a stimulating work environment in an area of applied, forefront research with the perspective of a permanent position after these 2 years. The gross monthly salary is dependent on qualifications and experience and ranges from €3.196 to € 4.998,- gross per month (Salary scale 11 or 12 ). The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 %; an end-of year-bonus of 8.33 % and 42 days of leave. The position is available immediately. Employment conditions are laid down in the 'CAO onderzoek-instellingen' and can be consulted at the FOM website (www.fom.nl under 'Personeelsinfo').
