Niek Lopes Cardozo to become full professor at Eindhoven University
16 April 2009
Prof.dr. Niek Lopes Cardozo, head of the Fusion Physics department at FOM-Rijnhuizen, is leaving the institute to assume a full professorship at Eindhoven Technical University (TU/e).

The new Chair of 'Science and Technology of Nuclear Fusion' will start up an ambitious and internationally appealing research and education programme in the field of nuclear fusion. He intends to make the TU/e, in cooperation with foreign centres of fusion education and with FOM-Rijnhuizen, an important node in the new European Network of Fusion Education FUSENET, which he helped initiate.
In the field of research, prof. Lopes Cardozo will also be working closely with other groups in- and outside of the University. Cooperation with partners such as the Dutch 3TU-federation, FOM-Rijnhuizen and the large European centres for fusion research will focus on topics such as the behavior of helium nuclei in a 'burning plasma' and methods to influence this behavior, and on the interaction of the reactor wall material with the plasma.
Niek Lopes Cardozo studied experimental physics at Utrecht University and received his PhD in 1985 for nuclear fusion-research at FOM-Rijnhuizen. After post-doctoral research at the fusionreactor JET (Culham, UK), he first became group leader and in 2001 head of the Fusion Physics department at Rijnhuizen. Lopes Cardozo was appointed parttime professor at the TU/e in 1994 and was promotor for some 20 PhD-students. He has taken a large interest in outreach, especially aimed at high school students, for whom he developed the Fusion Road Show. In 2003, Niek Lopes Cardozo received the Royal Dutch/Shell-prize for sustainable development and energy.
